We are currently looking for complete novels or novellas of at least 30,000 words to sell through the Virtual Tales website and other partner sites in eSerial, eBook and print formats. We will also consider the following:
- Short story collections with a strong central theme
- Reprints of previously published works that are out-of-print, so long as the author owns BOTH the electronic rights to the story and worldwide print rights
While we are open to a wide variety of genres that appeal to Young Adult on up, we are not open to submissions containing the following subject matter. These submissions will be automatically rejected:
- NC-17 / X rated stories
- Erotica
- Alternative lifestyles
- Children's books
- Self-published works that are currently available for sale anywhere
- Works for which only the electronic rights or print rights are available. In other words, you must be able to enter into a contract with us for exclusive, worldwide print AND e-rights. If you can only offer us one or the other, please do not submit your manuscript.
Terms
We purchase exclusive worldwide electronic and print rights to each story offered a contract. All rights revert back to the author should the story be removed from the Virtual Tales website.
Method of Work
Accepted works will be assigned to one of our staff editors for polishing. Authors will work directly with their editors to finalize their manuscript. Once approved for publication by the author, editor and the Virtual Tales Board of Directors, the manuscript will then be formatted into our eSerial and eBook formats for sale through a variety of marketplaces. If sales warrant, titles may also be selected for print publication for sale through Amazon.com and other marketplaces.
Payment
Payment for authors is on a royalty basis of 50% of all electronic sales of each work and 50% of net sales for print editions, minus PayPal fees. In addition to royalty compensation, authors also receive a brief biography and/or photograph on the Virtual Tales web site, along with a link back to their own website. If you do not have a professional biography, we will work with you to create one.
Royalty payments are sent quarterly. We pay only through PayPal, so authors must have a PayPal account.
Application Instructions
Due to increasing amounts of spam, we are no longer publishing our direct e-mail addresses on the website. To have your work considered for publication, please use our contact form to request the appropriate e-mail address to send us your submission package, which should contain the following in the body of the e-mail:
- Title (please provide at least a working title for your work)
- Genre (fantasy, mystery, science fiction, western, etc.)
- Word count
- A 40-word, promotional-style "quick teaser" blurb for web copy. Sell us with this blurb like you'll sell potential readers with it!
- A back cover hype of the work (100-200 words)
- A brief excerpt from the work (no more than 300 words)
- An outline/overview of the entire story arc
- Any previous publication information on the work, including where and when it was published, if applicable.
- A short author bio (100-250 words)
Include as an attachment the first 6,000 to 10,000 words as a Word document or .rtf file, making sure that your manuscript uses the following format:
- 1-inch margins all sides
- Times New Roman Font 12 pt.
- Double Spacing
- Header with title, author name and contact information including email address
- Check to make sure that you include only a single space after all punctuation, including periods
- One return at the end of each paragraph
Please spell-check your work! Manuscripts that do not follow this required format or have not been spell-checked will be rejected without further consideration.
